The University of Arid Agriculture, Rawalpindi, is the only institution of its kind on rainfed agriculture in the world. It was established at Shamsabad, Murree Road, Rawalpindi on April 27, 1994, on the occasion of the first convocation of the Barani Agriculture College, Rawalpindi. The University of Arid Agriculture Bill, 1994 was passed by the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab on the 30th of April, 1995 and assented to by the Governor of the Punjab on the 15th day of May, 1995, when it became an Act of the Provincial Assembly (published in the Gazette of the Punjab on 24th of May, 1995).The University includes the Faculty of Crop and Food Sciences, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of Livestock and Range Management, Directorate of Advance Studies and Research, University Institute of Management Sciences, the Division of Continuing Education, Home Economics and Women Development, and its most recently established Barani Institute of Information Technology. The Barani Institute of Information Technology (BIIT) was established at University of Arid Agriculture after a long and deliberate consideration of the growing needs of Software development and the initiative launched by Government of Pakistan. The Institute was established as a joint venture between the University of Arid Agriculture and M/S Resource Organizers and Software Engineers, (ROSE). The institute operates on self-financed scheme, and is concentrating on the following academic areas: Computer Sciences, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, and Mass Communications.
The Institute offers four year comprehensive undergraduate degree programs and two year graduate degree programs, namely: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science BS (CS), Bachelor of Science in Information Technology BS (IT), Bachelor of Computer Engineering (BCE), Master of Computer Science (MCS), Master of Information Technology (MIT), and Master of Mass Communication (MMC). In addition to the above mentioned degree programs, the Institute has also started offering an advanced Master degree program in Computer Science which is the first step towards PhD program to be launched very soon.n.
This new Master degree program is called Master of Science in Computer Science MS (CS), and has MCS or BS (CS) has perquisites. BS (CS), BS (IT) (previously known as BCS (Hons) and BIT (Hons) respectively) and BCE follow the four year curriculum proposed in University Grants Commission curriculum development meeting held in May 1998, and subsequently revised in UGC's National Curriculum Revision Committee for IT in April 2001. These undergraduate degree programs are the flagship programs of BIIT, where a major emphasis is placed on the standards and quality. Only the students having a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 are allowed to graduate from these programs.
The MCS and MIT programs are two year courses with four taught semesters. The total credit hours of the degree programs are 72 credit hours. Its worth mentioning that MCS is designed to be a Conversion Course for students with no or little background in Computer Science, leading them to a degree of Masters of Computer Science. MIT degree program on the other hand concentrates on a blend of Information Technology, Management Science, and Computer Science courses, developing IT managers and professionals.

Currently BIIT has state of the art computer laboratory facilities. On the whole there are 11 computer labs, one Sun Spare server, three Windows NT servers, one Internet Proxy server, and one Oracle server. There are eight student labs and one executive student lab, each comprising of twenty-five Pentium III machines. In addition to the student labs there is one Sun Spares lab and two labs for faculty. All the labs are networked through fast Ethernet hubs and switches. BIIT is an approved Microsoft Training Center and a premier partner of Oracle training program.m.
Punjab Information Technology Board recognized BIIT as one of the leading institutions in Information Technology, and as a token of this recognition, a grant of Rupees two million was awarded to establish a state of the art Information Technology Center. This IT Center was established with a total cost of Rupees five million and it started functioning in August 1999.
The admissions to BIIT are open to all persons of either sex and whatever religion, race, creed, class or color, and no person will be deprived of the benefits accruing from the University on any such grounds.
